Senegal is a river of Africa Western regime in tropical, along 1790 km, which rises in Guinea at 750 m altitude. He sprinkles the Mali and then Mauritania and Senegal , while serving as a border between these two countries before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean to St. Louis.

Summary

Geography

Senegal is in fact to form Bafoulab in Mali by the confluence of two rivers that descend from the mountain of Fouta Djallon , the Bafing and Bakoye (magnified the Baule ). Bafing, which provides half of the river water is thus regarded as the mother branch.

It receives on its left bank the Faleme , which is its main tributary and last significant and forms the border between Mali and Senegal, and on the right bank Colimbin the Karakoro the Ghorfa and Gorgol , smaller rivers or insignificant.

The watershed covers approximately 337 000 km and extends over four states. There are three differentiated regions: the upper basin to Bakel (city of Senegal, near the border with Mali), the valley of Bakel in St. Louis (816 km) and the delta.

Plan - Debits

His regime is very irregular and depends entirely on rainfall for monsoon. River basin belongs in fact largely to the region of the African Sahel and hence enjoys a semi-arid climate with erratic rainfall between 300 and 1000 mm / year. Only the southern part of the basin corresponding to its upper enjoys a tropical climate and thus receives more rainfall between 1000 and 2000 mm / year and a little more evenly distributed across the year. The average flow inter-annual or module of the river is 640 m 3 / s at its mouth but it can vary from 3 m 3 / s during low flow in 5000 m 3 / s in heavy flood. The high water periods are from July to November and low water periods from March to June During periods of great drought , low flow can sometimes crossing the river ford.

Average monthly flow (m / s) measured at the hydrological station Dagana - Watershed: 268 000 km 2 data calculated over the period 1903-1974 Airworthiness

It is usually navigable in all seasons of 175 km, from its mouth to Podor and in times of high water, about three months a year, to Kayes , at 975 km from the mouth.

Since 1972 , states bordering the Senegal River (Mali, Mauritania and Senegal) are organized within the OMVS ( Organization for the Development of the Senegal River ) to develop the river basin and rationally exploit its resources: energy , navigation , irrigation ...
