Secret History Of Justinian
The Secret History or the Secret History of Justinian is a work attributed to Procopius writing in the sixth century. This is the third book of Procopius. Probably posthumously, it is published after the year 560. This third book had to move only under the cloak with the Greek title "Anekdote", meaning "new things" (which gave the word anecdote). But this time the tone is different, in a tone radically different from previous works. Procopius pours his hatred to power up with a rare salacity.
The imperial couple consisting of Emperor Justinian I and Empress Theodora is attacked with extreme violence, both for his supposed sexual practices than for his bloody policy against the people of the Byzantine Empire.
Even General Belisarius and the latter's wife Antonina are the subject of vehement attacks.
Some passages are so rude and so close to pornography than it existed long as translations of Latin , sometimes redacted. It is a real firebrand launched against Justinian I in person. Some historians believe that Procopius, cultured man, scholar, linguist, soldier, even, would not the author of these writings brushing too often outrageous rudeness.
Procopius does not hesitate, for example, to attack the supposed bisexuality of Justinian , thus revealing his am-called intimate connection with a prince vandal of Africa , the future king Hildric , while in voluntary exile in Byzantium. He calls the Empress, "Messalina of the East "and told him she regretted that nature has not given him a fourth port to better enjoy the pleasures of the flesh, calling it a true stalker. Procopius ruthlessly hounds on the Empress, calling it a pushy, manipulative, conspiracy, being a loose woman, low birth, dissolute, spending his time organizing and participating in massive orgies and fornicate with his own slaves and servants in the imperial palace.
More politics, the book accuses the imperial power have ruined and oppressed the people of the empire. Chapter 11 is titled as "How the Defender of the Faith Ruina His Subjects."
