Santarm is a Portuguese city, occupying a hill on the right bank of the Tagus , in the Ribatejo region and subregion of the Tagus Lezra with 28 900 inhabitants.
It is the seat of a municipality of 558.29 km 2 and 63,563 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 28 parishes. The municipality is bounded on the north by the municipalities of Porto de Mos , Alcanena and Torres Novas , east by Goleg and the Chamusca , south-east by Alpiara and Almeirim , south by Cartaxo , south- is Azambuja , west by the Rio Maior and north-east by Alcobaa.
Scalabis originally called by the Romans, it became an important fortress city during the wars between the Moors and Christians, and was finally conquered by the Christians in 1147.
Tourism
- The Portas do Sol are the ruins of the castle was a royal residence during the Middle Ages.
- The Church of Our Lady of the old College Jesuit (1676) is now the cathedral of the Diocese of Santarm.
