Summary

/ / Architecture
Facade of the Sainte-Chapelle.

The plans are probably due to Pierre de Montreuil , who erected in record time: from 1242 to 1248 .

This building is considered a masterpiece of Gothic art , some authors even consider it the culmination of this art.

Designed as a shrine to showcase precious relics are preserved there, the Sainte-Chapelle, built in the royal palace of the Ile de la Cite, was also used as a royal chapel. It superimposes two chapels , the lower for the common people, the greater the king's entourage, according to current use in the construction of royal palaces of the Middle Ages. At first, the upper chapel was also accessible by the upper galleries of the palace, St. Louis did not build a public stairway.

For its construction, Pierre de Montreuil brought a real technical innovation, linking metal, very advanced for the time since it was not rediscovered until the twentieth century .

Originally a small annex building was erected near the apse. The lower level served as a vestry , while the part located at the upper chapel hosted acts and royal seals. This appendix disappeared in 1777 during the reconstruction of the courtyard.

At the height of the roof is a statue of the archangel Michael.

Chapel low

The lower chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary , was available to service people and serves as a base to the upper chapel. Low ceiling, lined with massive pillars supporting the entire weight of the building, it exists only for its functional and architectural: help lighten up the building by supporting the entire weight of the upper chapel.

Chapel High

The walls of the upper chapel are completely removed and replaced with large plate allowing light to pass, only separated by thin bundles of pillars. The windows depict religious scenes, they were chosen for the space occupied by the royal personages in the offices, windows evoking King David or King Solomon being placed close to the king.

The windows are a homogenous group, whose dominant red and blue give this chapel radiance.

The windows of the nave, high of 15.35 m and 4.70 m wide, is divided into four lancets surmounted by a rose to six lobes and two quatrefoil (like elements of four-leaf clover). The windows of the apse, with a height of 13.45 m and a width of 2.10 m, have only two lancets and three trefoils (clover-shaped elements).

The scenes of the windows depict:
