Effect of sacramentals

The purpose of the sacraments is union with God, or in other words being able to live after the Paschal mystery of Christ. Similarly, sacramentals are aids to live this new reality in everyday life. Find a right relationship to things, for example: to bless his house to urge it to be a foster home and life with God. The blessing of the people with responsibilities in a community (priest, religious), is a prayer that the exercise of this function is ordered to grace not to sin and so on.

Technically, it is clear that the sacramental act ex opere operantis "Ecclesiae, that is to say, due to the action of the Church, not ex opere operato", that is to say merely because the sacrament is done.

Apart from the rituals of blessing, there are also exhortations (the sick, proclaiming the faith etc..) And the formalization of liturgical celebrations in the heart of the liturgical life of the Church.

Composition of sacramentals

Often found in the sacramental signs of the imposition of hands, anointing, the use of holy water (blessed water prior being itself a sacramental).

Who can perform a sacramental?

Sacramentals can be administered either by the bishop (dedication of a basilica), the presbyter (blessed water) or by the laity (blessing of a meal).

Who can "take advantage" of a sacramental?

Most Sacramentals are meant for all men, baptized or not (blessing of a meal, a house etc..) Some sacramentals are intended for catechumens during the catechumenate, ie in front of Christian Initiation baptism. Others are restricted to specific commitments (blessing of an abbot, for example).
