Russell Ballard
Melvin Russell Ballard, Jr. was born on 8 October 1928 in Salt Lake City in the Utah , the United States , is a businessman and religious leader. On 10 October 1985 , he was called to serve in the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an Apostle , R. Ballard is regarded in the Church as prophet, seer and face. He is the sixth-oldest apostle in the ranks of the Church.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Melvin Russell Ballard has served a mission in England. In 1974 he was called as Mission President in the mission of Toronto , Canada. After the death of the Apostle Bruce McConkie , R. Ballard was sustained in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles October 6, 1985 and ordained apostle in the LDS Church October 10, 1985.
Melvin R. Ballard is the grand-son of the Apostle Melvin J. Ballard and Hyrum Smith and he is a descendant of Hyrum Smith , brother of the founder of the Church, Joseph Smith.
Professional activities
Professionally, Ballard was a partner in several companies, including the automobile , the real estate and business investment. It has been trading for his father, Nash Motors car dealership and other business interests continued in the early 1950s. In 1956, Ballard returned to resume "Ballard Motor Company" of his father. During this period he also served in the Army Reserve United States, resigning from his position as first lieutenant in 1957.
During the late 1950s, Ballard was recruited by Ford Motor Company to become the first car dealership Edsel for Salt Lake City. He signed and suffered a huge loss, "without a doubt the darkest period of his career in business. Family Melvin R. Ballard met his wife, Barbara Bowen, when he was a student at the University of Utah. He married her in 1951. The Ballard are the parents of seven children. One of their daughters is married to Peter Huntsman , who is the brother of Jon Huntsman , Utah Governor and the son of Jon M. Huntsman of seventy in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and billionaire philanthropist. In November 2009, community services of the Catholic Church of Utah have the distinction awarded to Melvin R. Ballard, mentioning that he was renowned for its "cooperation with the Catholic Church in order to cater to the smallest among us." Religious leaders and associations have paid tribute to Mr. Russell Ballard by awarding him the title "builder of bridges," referring to his actions to bring together the various communities to unite their efforts to help those in need.
