The Royal Geographical Society is a learned society , founded in 1830 as the for the Advancement and Geographical Sciences, under the sponsorship of William IV. It absorbed the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa (founded by Sir Joseph Banks in 1788), the Raleigh Club and the Palestine Association. She received a royal charter by Queen Victoria in 1859.
History

Today the Royal Society is a leading global center in the teaching of geography. It supports education and training, research and scientific expeditions as well as it promotes the general public understanding and enjoyment of geography. The Royal Society is a member of the Science Council. It merged with the Institute of British Geographers hence its current name Royal Geographical Society (with The Institute of British Geographers. Its offices are located in the district of Kensington , in London.
