Raymond Edward Brown
Raymond Edward Brown, born 22 May 1928 , died on 8 August 1998 , was a priest Sulpician American theologian and exegete. Appointed in 1972 and 1996 to serve on the Pontifical Biblical Commission , which advises the pope on scriptural subjects, and teacher for 23 years at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He gained a reputation as a leading biblical scholars, a specialist New Testament in the United States.
Cardinal Mahony called it "Catholic scholar of the Bible's most distinguished and most famous who ever lived in this country," calling his death "a great loss for the Church." Brown was honored for 24 degrees of doctor honoris causa by the Universities of the United States and Europe, many of whom were Protestant, and he received the Catholic Press Book Award, the Edgar J. Godspeed Award, BAS Publ. Award, Best NT Comm.
He was president of the Catholic Biblical Association, the Society of Biblical Literature (1976-77) and the Society of Biblical Literature (1986-87). He was a member of the Learned Society of St. Sulpice and Catholic priest of the Diocese of Baltimore. He was quoted in academic works of Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.
But he aroused the misgivings of traditionalists, who accuse its dependence on modern exegesis.
