Punt (traditional French name), often referred to as Puntland is a region in north-eastern Somalia , with its capital at Garowe (region Nugaal ), whose leaders declared themselves independent in 1998. The government seems to see this move as an attempt to remake a federal republic of Somalia. Unlike Somaliland neighbor, he does not claim independence vis--vis Somalia. This name derives from Punt mentioned in texts of ancient Egypt , some believe they can locate in the current Somalia.

Summary

History

Punt considers itself an autonomous state within Somalia. In 1969 , when the Somali government was the subject of a coup d'tat , years of war and chaos ensued. An unsuccessful invasion of Ethiopia made following the relocation of supporting Soviet Somalia to Ethiopia, where a pro-Soviet government came to power. Deprived of Soviet support, Somalia turned to the United States , which helped to Siad Barre , self-proclaimed president of the country, to remain in power until the end of the Cold War in 1991. When the USSR collapsed, American support for the Somali government ceased, and Barre was overthrown.

After that, the Somali government had no more safe, constant wars ravaging the southern region. These events led to the secession of Somaliland in 1991, which was briefly independent in 1960. The violence persisted, prompting the UN to send a peacekeeping force for peace in war-torn Somalia. The aid mission ended March 3, 1994 after the Battle of Mogadishu.

Somalia remained unstable, and in 1998, the Punt declared independent under the chairmanship of Abdullah Yusuf Ahmed (deputy president of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front). While this separation has been performed for tribal reasons, this nation has the primary objective confederation of clans. Since 1998, border disputes erupted Punt and Somaliland over the regions of Sool and Sanaag.

Unlike the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland, Punt will not seek to be recognized as an independent country by the international community. It seeks to become a federal division within a federal republic of united Somalia. But the two "lands" have one thing in common: they both rely on the support of tribal leaders and their organization is also based on tribe and kinship. The Somali capital Mogadishu and other southern cities are said to be much less developed than the cities of Somaliland and Punt ( Bossaso , Hargeisa , Las Anod , Garowe , etc..). These two self-proclaimed states are economically and politically supported by Ethiopia, Somalia's historic enemy.

Punt was the first experience of political turmoil in 2001 when President Ahmed wanted to see its mandate extended. Ahmed and Jama Ali Jama fought for control of the country, and in 2002 , Ahmed won the victory. He was president until October 2004 , when he was elected president of Somalia. He was succeeded by Muhammad Abdi Hashi , who was president until January 2005 , where he represented but was not reelected, Parliament preferring the General Mohamud Muse Hersi (Adde). In December 2004, Puntland sustained serious damage caused by the tsunami of December 26, 2004 , during which the international community was accused of ignoring the Punt and other countries in Africa affected by the disaster.

In November 2006 , the Union of Islamic Courts have taken Bandiiradley , a city of considerable strategic importance located near the border between Puntland and Mudug. However, the Spokesperson of warlord Abdi Hassan Awale Qeybdiid claims that its troops have done that making a strategic retreat from the area. Mohamed Mohamud Jama , a spokesman for the Islamic Courts, announced that the Court established walking on Galkacyo , part of which is claimed by the Punt. That same month, General Adde announced that he would govern according to Islamic law, but in a different way of Islamic Courts to avoid "politicizing religion." Adde then announced that Puntland would resist any attack by the courts and the latter after the offensive Ethiopian fled the area.

Geography

The "Punt", with its largest city, the port of Bosasso (49.10 E, 11.07 N, Bender Qasim and ex Moxylon in antiquity), extends from Las Qorey (48.11 E, 11.09 N) on the northern coast until Garad (appr. 49.23 E, 7.01 N) on the east coast, and Galk'ayo inside - city divided between the South Somalia and Punt. Bosasso is linked by a paved road to Mogadishu and by sea and air with the Arabian Peninsula, primarily the Yemen and Oman , but also directly with Dubai. Bosasso used to export meat and incense and import of all consumer goods, coming mostly from Dubai. The border between Somaliland and Punt is disputed as not corresponding to the limits of the major clans.
