Psalmus Hungaricus
The Psalmus Hungaricus opus 13 of Zoltn Kodly is a work for tenor , chorus and orchestra composed in 1923.
The Psalmus was commissioned to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Buda and Pest , and was created in November 1923 with the Suite of Dances of Bela Bartok , both directed by Ern Dohnnyi.
The text is based on the gloss of Psalm 55 by Mihly Kecskemeti Veg (hu) at the XVI century. This text contains passages of despair and a call to God, which specialists refer to the political situation in Hungary after the First World War , or political persecution that Zoltn Kodly had to submit shortly before.
This is one of the works performed and recorded most of Kodly.
