The story is in the Gospel according to Luke 15:11-32 of the New Testament of the Bible , where it is the third and final part of a trilogy , preceded immediately by the Lost Sheep and Lost Coin.

The dish features two characters, the eldest son, who follows the commandments of his father, and second, the prodigal son, who tired from exploring the world.
