Since its inception, the State of Israel adopted a parliamentary system with a prime minister as head of government and a president as head of state, authorities reduced to ceremonial functions.
For several years, by introducing the election of prime ministers direct universal suffrage , their role was increased because it allowed a government to exist with only a minority coalition in parliament, the Knesset.
However, this trend is creating a crumbling political system, a return to the old method of voting (proportional integral to a turn) was decided in 2001.
The prime minister has a residence in Jerusalem, Beth Agion in the neighborhood of Rehavia.
