Preferential Option For The Poor
The preferential option for the poor is a principle developed in the social doctrine of the Catholic Church.
Christian tradition always brings the principles of charity and justice:
- "When we give to the poor necessities, we do not make personal gifts for them, but we pay what is theirs.
- More than performing an act of charity, we perform a duty of justice "(Saint Gregory the Great , Regula pastoralis, late sixth century ).
The encyclical Centesimus Annus (1991) elaborates on this principle at No. 57.
The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church summarizes this principle to n (os) 182 to 184.
Groups of Christians in Latin America and the Third World fighting for an interpretation and application of very strong preferential option for the poor.
- Some even make a doctrine of action, liberation theology , which has contributed and continues to generate considerable controversy.
