This paper presents the preface to the extraordinary form of Roman rite.

In the Gregorian chant , the preface is a piece of the ordinary. The Preface is sung by the celebrant, making it a fairly simple piece. However it takes place at the most solemn celebration, it is sung right after the prayer whispered in a low voice by the priest, the Secret, which depends on clean day. It thus receives a much more ornate than other parts of the celebrant.

It is introduced by the following dialogue (sung) between the celebrant and the congregation:
Celebrant: Dominus vobiscum
Assembly: And cum spiritu tuo
Celebrant: Sursum corda
Assembly: Habemus ad Dominum
Celebrant: Deo Gratias Agamus Domino nostro
Assembly: Dignum and justum is.

Text

There are many variants, the most famous being the so-called ordinary prefaces, sung to the masses this week, and tell the prefaces of the Trinity, sung ordinary Sundays. Then there are prefaces own at Christmas, the Feast of Christ the King, the Assumption, Ascension, etc.. Or for special events: Mass in honor of a pontiff to a virgin martyrdom, etc.. Some countries or dioceses may have their own prefaces Saints nationals.
  3. A formula of conclusion, then introducing the Sanctus. This formula refers to the conclusion most of the time the angels, since they are the ones who sang the Sanctus. There are several variants of the formula, including two main ones.
