Prayer

Prayer is an act and sometimes an attitude, to maintain a sense of union with God Buddhist Prayer

In Buddhism, as well as in the Theravada Buddhism which nowadays is the closest in Buddhism or Zen , monks do not pray and prayer is meaningless (because of the impersonality of beings) outside a devotional practice left to the common people. Attachment to rites or belief to the effects of prayer (silavrata-paramarsa) is also one of the ten links that must be broken to achieve the enlightenment. According to SN Goenka : "It is wrong to pray to Buddha to send him a request, it is not in his teaching. A being released only show the way, you have to make the necessary efforts to achieve the final goal. "

In Tibetan Buddhism , prayer is less for itself than as an accompaniment practices such as meditation or teachings .

It is spoken or sung and allowing altruistic intent and focus on one goal: enlightenment. To take refuge, it begins as follows: "In the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, I take refuge until enlightenment", which means that we are going to the Buddha, his teaching, and community Buddhist. Then we thank other important figures of Buddhism for their contribution to the world. We can also pray at mealtimes to thank the Buddhas and the circumstances of having to eat.

In terms of religion Christian - the " Our Father "(Pater Noster) is the fundamental prayer has taught Jesus Christ - ( New Testament ). For Tertullian , "Prayer is the spiritual sacrifice which removed the ancient sacrifices."

"Every ground should not be a prayer - Prayer is a fundamental act of Christian faith, lived as a Thanksgiving and communion with God , a communion of minds between God and His people. It is "God the Father" which the believer prays "in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ." In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells his followers how to pray:

  • (13) and whatever you ask in my name, I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (14) If you ask anything in my name, I will. John XIV
  • (23) In that day you shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father, He will give you on my behalf. (24) Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name. Ask and you shall receive, that your joy may be full. John XVI

Practices of meditation , of fasting and sleep may be associated with prayer, as well as readings of texts, biblical or not. For the believer, God is everywhere and prayer can take place anywhere.

For Christians, God is alive and sensitive to Christian prayer, and he hopes it meets in action (sometimes by desire, sometimes different, sometimes immediately, sometimes quite delayed). Some Christians have a very passionate relationship with God, even talking to her turbulent and stormy as a close friend, a human father, making him even blame and expressing their anger. In Christianity, the Holy Spirit through faith , the scriptures , other Christians and even non-believers can help Christians to discern God's response. She seems obvious and sometimes clear, sometimes pronounced by God, and more often diffuse, difficult or even impossible to discern immediately. Examples of Christian prayers by Orthodox and Roman Catholic rite

Various studies have examined the question of the efficacy of prayers including some medical studies. .

A similar experiment conducted in California on 40 AIDS patients (prayers for 20 patients at a distance by Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Indian and shaman) also showed positive results for the group to which he had been asked .

This study was conducted from 1998 to 2000 and involved 1802 patients in six U.S. hospitals. The patients were divided into three groups.

  • Group 1: Patients are told they will perhaps be the subject of prayers, and they benefit from prayers.
  • Group 2: Patients are told they will perhaps be the subject of prayers, and they did not receive prayers.
  • Group 3: Patients are told they will be prayers, and they actually enjoy.

Three prayer groups, two Catholic and one Protestant, received the first name and initial of the names of patients who benefit from prayers, and were instructed to pray for "a successful surgery and rapid healing without complication" patients.

No differences were found, within thirty days after bypass surgery, between patients in groups 1 and 2. By cons, patients in group 3 had developed more complications than others (59% against 51%), a figure interpreted by the authors of the study as probably resulting from the stress suffered by patients anxious to know "so sick that we had recourse to a prayer group. " The American Heart Journal said that the study was primarily funded by the John Templeton Foundation religious, it did not examine the impact of personal prayer or relatives, and was not intended to examine the existence of God or whether or not hears the prayers.
