History The Point was founded in 1972 by a team of journalists who had left a year earlier, the chief editor of L'Express, then headed by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber.
The founding members of the Point in 1982
The founding team consisted of Oliver Point Chevrillon (CEO), journalists: Claude Imbert , Jacques Duquesne , Pierre Billard , Georges Suffert , Trinchet Henry, Robert Frank, the head of advertising and marketing Philippe Ramond , and the director Michel Bracciali. Financially based on the group Hachette , which is then CEO Simon Nora , this team was recruited from the spring of 1972 journalists - considered among the best performers - through the headlines of the Parisian press.
The first item was counting on its ability to renew the genre of the weekly news magazine, the "news magazine" type of Newsweek or Time. In three years the newspaper has managed to achieve financial balance and to be particularly beneficial.
It still is today, in this model.
Its managing editor is Franz-Olivier Giesbert , former editor of the Nouvel Observateur and the Figaro.
Ownership successive
After the victory of the Left in the elections of 1981, Point left the group Hachette , threatened to be nationalized, the management team is afraid of losing its autonomy. The newspaper group includes the cinema Gaumont , chaired by the wealthy and liberal Nicolas Seydoux. In 1992, seeking to withdraw its investment in the Point, Nicolas Seydoux sells its shares to the Western General (founded by Jimmy Goldsmith since 1987 and anchored to the General Electricity Company CGE , who also owns L'Express ). A GIE L'Express Le Point-birth takes to manage in particular advertising, an important source of income. This bizarre coupling of two weekly competitors only last so long. In October 1995, CGE, now Alcatel-Alsthom, is contributing its press activities to CEP Communications, a subsidiary of Havas , a group whose Alcatel (CEO: Serge Tchuruk ) becomes the main shareholder.
A more elegant and rational is found in 1997 with businessman Francois Pinault , CEO of the holding company Artemis , which is very close to Jacques Chirac. Franois Pinault takes his group through the control point. Claude Imbert, as guarantor of the continuity of the newspaper and its online remains one of the columnists key.
