Summary |
The present building is the work of the family Horowitz. In 1535 , Aaron Horowitz Meshullam built it between his house "U Erbuer" and the site of the ancient Jewish cemetery.
After the Second World War , the synagogue was turned into a memorial of the Jews of Bohemia and Moravia murdered by the Nazis. The walls are covered with the names of the victims of the Czechoslovak Holocaust , their personal dates and name of the community to which they belonged. In 1968 , however, the memorial had to be closed because the groundwater had entered the building foundation, weakening the structure. When working underground waterproofing of the building, vaulted spaces and an ancient well and a ritual bath were discovered.
The regime communist deliberately hindered the renovations and the inscriptions were erased. It was not until 1990 that it was possible to complete the repairs to the building. Finally, in 1 992 - one thousand nine hundred ninety-four , the 80 000 names of Jewish victims of Bohemia and Moravia were rewritten on the walls last.
