Pierre Grimal

Pierre Grimal, born in Paris on 21 November 1912 , died in Paris on 11 October 1996 , is a historian and a Latinist French. Passionate about Roman civilization , he did much to promote the cultural heritage of ancient Rome , both among specialists and the general public.

He was married to Claude-Edmond Magny , whose real name Edmonde Vinel, and the father of the Egyptologist Nicolas Grimal.

Admitted to the Ecole Normale Superieure in 1933, received third in the aggregation of Classics in 1935 , he was a member of the French School in Rome (1935-1937) and as practiced in Latin teacher in high school in Rennes , then as professor of Latin language and civilization in the faculties of Caen , Bordeaux , and finally at the Sorbonne University for thirty years.

He published studies on Roman civilization, including many books published by Que sais-je, translations of Latin classics ( Cicero , Seneca , Tacitus , Plautus , Terence ). Upon retirement, he also published biographies and historical fiction romanticized (Memoirs of T. Pomponius Atticus , Memoirs of Agrippina , The Trial of Nero ), more for the general public.

At the end of his life, he campaigned for the preservation of humanities education in secondary education.
