The iron oxide (II) stoichiometry can be obtained from non-stoichiometric oxide by heating it with iron metal at 770 C under 3.6 MPa .

FeO is thermodynamically unstable below 575 C, and disproportionation in iron metal and iron oxide (II, III) Fe 3 O 4:

4 FeO Fe + Fe 3 O 4.
