The area of the East (in Arabic : in Berber : Tamnat Ugmu n) is one of the sixteen regions of Morocco. It occupies the north-eastern Morocco. Northern Region East correpond to much of the Rif Oriental. Its area is 82,900 square kilometers with a population of 1,918,094 Geography

The Oriental region consists mainly of three types of relief:


The boundaries

This region is bounded on the north by the Mediterranean Sea and Spain ( Melilla ), west by the provinces of Taza-Al Hoceima-Taounate and Fez-Boulemane , east by Algeria and South-West by region Mekns-Tafilalet.

Roads

The road network along 5,258 km divided between:

  • National roads: 1,525 km;
  • Regional highways: 945 km;
  • Provincial Highways: 2,354 km;
  • Communal roads: 434 km.
  • Highways ( A 9 ): 120 km

The geographical density of the network is 6.5 km / km.

Rail

Station Nador

The railway network is a length of 554 km divided into three main lines:

  • Oujda - Casablanca and Oujda - Morocco-Algerian border: 156 km;
  • Oujda - Bouarfa: 280 km.
  • Taourirt - Nador: 120 km

Moreover, there are also lines for Guenfouda and Hassi Balal.

Maritime Network

The area has three ports:

  • Wearing "Blessed Enzar", which is among the largest ports in the UK both by the size of its facilities by the volume of its traffic
  • The Marina Mediterrania Saidia-
  • Wearing "Ras El Ma" dedicated solely to fishing activity

Economy

Agriculture

  • Agricultural area: 699,589 hectares;
  • Irrigated area: 109 236 hectares;
  • Cultivable area: 437,473 hectares;
  • Tree planting: 67 948 hectares.

Breeding

The total is 2,750,488 heads divided between:

  • Cattle: 92 726;
  • Sheep: 2148548;
  • Goats: 506 024;
  • Camel: 3200.

Marine fisheries

The Oriental region has a large number of fishing sites that were valued by the completion of port "Blessed Enzar" which has allowed the development of coastal fisheries, artisanal fisheries and the aquaculture.

Industry

The industry has undergone a consolidation process under the leadership of this state and by the introduction of four large industrial units some of which are of national character both in terms of production than that of marketing.

The Oriental has nearly 300 industrial units with a hundred in Oujda and about eighty to Nador , units that employ about 7,000 people.

Tourism

The Oriental region has diversified tourism assets bolstered its double border position: on one side along the Mediterranean coastline of 200 km and another, mountains, desert.

To welcome domestic and foreign visitors, this area includes:

  • 38 hotels totaling 1,478 rooms classified according to international standards.
  • 115 hotels unclassified 2609 rooms for 4569 beds.

The hotel supply in the region has increased dramatically since the opening of the resort Mediterrania Saidia, and very large Spanish and French retailers have settled in this new resort (Riu, Iberostar, Barcelo, Sofitel. ..) as well as the city of Oujda.

Education

The region has:

  • 491 primary schools including 252 847 students in 6353 classrooms.
  • 89 colleges comprising 74 369 students for 1954 classrooms.
  • 57 schools with 41 311 students to 1,382 classrooms.

The University Mohammed Ier Oujda hosts over 20,000 students from the Oriental and neighboring provinces in the Faculties:
