Odoacer
Odoacer born in Pannonia to 435 , is the son of Edecon , Chief Skira allied with Huns and Minister of Attila. He is said to have been the chief Heruli , but they were actually allies.
It is the principal actor in the final fall of the Roman Empire by depositing the last emperor of the West , Romulus Augustus , and returning the imperial insignia to the Eastern Emperor Zeno. Backed by its Heruli mercenaries and barbarians of Italy that mass especially in the north, he governs the peninsula with the title of patrician from the year 476.
On the death of Julius Nepos in 480 , he held the Dalmatian but from 488 , he must struggle against the Ostrogoths and their allies of King Theodoric the Great , sent by Byzantium in order to drive him from Italy. He was beaten three times by Theodoric, supported by the Visigoth 's son, King Alaric II : at Aquileia in 489 , at Verona , then on the banks of the Adda in 490. Forced to withdraw to Ravenna , his capital, he resists three years while he is besieged.
Theodoric eventually offer him a contract and Odoacer agrees to surrender in March 493. Fifteen days later he was assassinated in broad Ostrogothic banquet by the king himself, his family, his followers and his lieutenants were killed or executed, his army decimated or integrated into the armed Ostrogoths.
