Summary |
According to the Torah, Noah is the son of Lamech , tenth in the line of Adam through Seth. According to the chronology of Chapter 5 of Genesis , is born 1056 years after the creation of Adam and 126 years after his death (10 generations between Adam and Noah). When Lamech called his son named Noah, he said: "This will bring us comfort in our work and the pain of our hands from the ground that God has cursed. "( Genesis 5. 28-31 ).
The world in which Noah lived had deteriorated, but he himself was not to be corrupt, as the Word of God could she say about her: "Noah was a righteous man. He showed no defect among his contemporaries. Noah walked with the true God . The Hebrew name Noah, Noah, is composed of two letters Nun and Het. Reversed, these two letters form the word 'Hen, grace; the two words contained in Genesis 6. 8 : "But Noah (Noah, Nun Het) found grace (Hen Het Noun) in the eyes of the Lord. " If Noah looks "in the eyes" of YHWH , there is "grace," his name reversed, as in a mirror.
The story goes that, sad to see the earth filled with violence and corruption, God decided to drown his creations under a deluge of rain. Only Noah's family and pairs of animals of each species will be rescued from the water through the arch built by the divine plans. Therefore, all humans are descendants of Noah.
- Announcement of the Deluge made to Noah:
"The Lord said unto Noah into the ark, you and your whole family, because I've only just seen my eyes in this generation. Of all clean animals, you will take seven pairs, the male and his female animals that are not pure, you will take a couple, the male and female and also birds of heaven, seven pairs, male and female to perpetuate the race on the earth. For yet seven days and I will rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights and I will erase from the surface all the things that I made. "
In 2 Peter 2. 5 , Noah is described as a " preacher of justice. "
Drunkenness of Noah
The narration is done in Genesis 9. 20-27 : "And Noah began to be a good farmer and then planted three vines. And he began to drink wine and got drunk, and so he lay uncovered in his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father's hand and made his two brothers outside. Shem and Japheth took a garment ... then went backward and covered the nakedness of their father ... Noah awoke from his wine and learned what had been his youngest son. He says: "Cursed be Canaan! It will be a slave to his brothers slaves! . Then he said: "Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Shem ... Elohim exalts Japheth .... " "
The version found in the Qumran Scrolls - manuscript referenced: 1QapGen, column 13 - does not state of drunkenness or nudity (and cursing) and it talks about giving thanks to God after a party following the first harvest after the flood. (Dead Sea Scrolls, full version, publisher Plon, 2001, page 93).
A prophetic image among Christians
The prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel and Jesus of Nazareth mention Noah. Jesus and the apostle Peter said that the days of Noah prefigured "the coming of the Son of Man" (the glorious return of Christ at the end of time) and a future Day of Judgement and destruction of men impious. ( 2 Peter 3. 5-7 , 2 Peter 2. 5.6 ; Matthew 24. 37-39 ): "This was in the days of Noe, so even the Son of man. For in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and marrying their children until the day Noah entered the ark, and doubted they did nothing until the flood came and took them all away so shall also the coming of the Son of man. "
In Islam
In the Islam , Noah (Arabic nuh) is a prophet ("Nabi" or "Rassoul" = who receives the message) whose mission was to convey the divine message down to earth in the form of revelation ("Risala" = The message). He preached the word of the One God to his people.
As such, it is mentioned on numerous occasions in the Qur'an. The sura 71 bears his name There was the preaching done by Noah to his contemporaries was the call for the submission to God alone. The story of the Flood is also a short way back in Sura 11 and in many other suras even more brief.
Compared to the Noah story written in the Bible, the Koran has several notable differences or additional information:
- The universality of the flood is a fact on which all Muslim scholars are granted it without divergence, following various Hadiths (prophetic story) when speaking or interpreting some verses that speak to all mankind when God asks them be thankful that he saved from the flood while all others were doomed to perish.
- Noah preached 950 years among his people (Quran 29 | 14) with legendary patience. Only a handful of people have followed, including the poor. Allah tells him that nobody else will follow. Most idolatrous and polytheistic, including notables, had called a liar as so often in prophecy (Quran 11 | 36).
- The story of Noah's drunkenness is confused. For the prophets of God are immunized against the deadly sins such as drunkenness, adultery and lying.
- People saved in the ark are not all immediate family of Noah. Just good people who believe in God, were saved (Quran 11 | 40}.
- Some members of his family perished. His wife stayed behind like the wife of Prophet Lut for the destruction of Sodom & Gomori (Quran 66 | 10). In addition, a son of Noah did not boarded the ark is believed to shelter on higher ground. Noah wanted to assist but a wave intervened. Then he invoked Allah for her child but it was revealed that it is not his family (spiritual) because he is among those who denied (Quran 11 | 44-46).
- The Israelites, who are descendants of Israel (Jacob) are mentioned in the Qur'an as being the offspring of the survivors who accompanied Noah, not his own line which is specified in various verses (Qur'an 17 | 02 - 03).
- The ark landed on Mount Al Judi, which could be located on the mountain range Ararat in Armenian plateau. The Koran speaks of huge waves like mountains (Quran 69 | 11-12) and some verses as Allah speak to people as being the offspring of those who survived the flood, leading to say that the flood was a disaster or a global cataclysm.
- The Qur'an mentions the idolatrous deities venerated by the people of Noah in the Qur'an that has the same name in verse 23: Wudd, Soua' (Souwa') Yaghouth, Ya''ouq and Nasr.
