The State of New York is the third state the most populous of the United States with 19 million inhabitants, fewer than Texas , and two times less than the California. It is located in the northeast of the country. Its shape is roughly that of an inverted pyramid, whose summit, the South would be the city of New York , on the Atlantic Ocean. North and west, the territory of the State widens and shares a long border with Canada (provinces of Ontario and Quebec ), much of which consists of lakes Erie and Ontario. To the east, the state is bordered by Vermont , the Massachusetts , the Connecticut , while in the south, it shares a border with New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

If the City of New York is located in the State of New York, much of its urban area is located in the neighboring states of Connecticut and New Jersey. By contrast, upstate New York is fairly rural.

This is the third richest state in the country after California and Texas , if it were an independent nation, it would be the 16th largest economy in the world, ahead of South Korea.
The only island of Manhattan produces about three quarters of the wealth of the State of New York. Then it would be the 20th largest economy, the same rank as the Swiss , if it were independent (for an area of only 52 square kilometers and 1.5 million inhabitants).

The state is somewhat larger (but much less dense) than the UK. From 1810 to 1960, he was the most populous state in the United States, a title he was delighted to Virginia and had abandoned in California.

For forty years, the Dutch built a settlement in character decidedly similar to the United Provinces in North America. When the British have appropriated in 1664 the colony, it was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York , brother of Charles II , future king of England under the name of Jacques II , which included between 7,000 and 10,000 settlers.
