The Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region is property of World Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO , the only site of the Republic of Macedonia to receive this distinction.
The Ohrid region was classified in 1979 for its great natural interest. Indeed, it is a refuge for a large number of animal and plant species, some of which are endangered in the world. The Lake Ohrid , which is home to several endemic species, is also the oldest lake in Europe.
In 1980 , the designated area was extended to also protect the cultural and historical richness of the region, which is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and has a large number of Byzantine monuments. The town of Ohrid , Macedonia's tourist capital, nicknamed the Macedonian Jerusalem, is a mecca of Orthodox Christianity.
