The National School of Librarians (ENSB), ancestor of Enssib was created in 1963 in Paris , by Decree No. 63-712 of 12 July 1963 , with the status of public administrative establishment. The school is then installed in the National Library in Building 2, rue Louvois, which remain the conference room and classrooms, now reused by the music department. The public library Massy serves as "Library Application" for students. The ENSB is transferred to Villeurbanne in 1974.

It is replaced by Enssib, created by Decree No. 92-25 Current Operations

It also has offices in Paris ( 15th arrondissement ) until August 2009 for writing the Bulletin des bibliothques de France , when integrating it into the local Enssib, motivated by the general revision of public policies. However, the site of Grandclment (also in Villeurbanne, in the neighborhood of the same name), which was originally installed the Training Institute of Librarians, now integrated into enssib, is now abandoned with the enlargement of the premises La Doua.
