The museum consists of two buildings. The first is devoted to collections pre- Islamic , the second includes all the objects in the Islamic era.

The first building consists of three halls. The three halls contain artifacts from the Paleolithic , the Neolithic and the Bronze Age and Iron ages to the Medes , Achaemenid , Seleucid , Parthian and Sassanian.

  • The main entrance is the first building built in the style vaults Sassanid , particularly the iwan of Ctesiphon.

  • The building itself was designed by French architect Andre Godard in the early twentieth century.

The post-Islamic museum was inaugurated in 1996 and has 3 floors. It contains numerous pieces of pottery, textiles, texts, works of art, astrolabes and calligraphy from the 1400 years of Islamic history of Iran.

Collections

The oldest objects in the museum are from Gilan and back to the Stone Age. There are also human and animal figurines dating back 9000 years discovered Teppe Sarab in Kermanshah Province.

Many parts of the museum's permanent collection are regularly loaned to other museums of importance, such as the British Museum in London.
