National Geographic Society (NGS), established on 27 January 1888 , whose head office is in Washington , the United States , is one of the largest organizations in scientific and educational non-profit world. His interests range from geography , the archeology , the natural sciences , the promotion of the environment , historic preservation and study of cultures and world history.
The logo of the National Geographic Society is a yellow box that appears on the cover of its flagship publication, the magazine National Geographic.

General
The mission was given the National Geographic Society is to "increase and diffuse knowledge geographic while promoting the preservation of cultural resources, historical and natural world. " According to John M. Fahey, Jr., its CEO since March 1998 , the goal of the NGS is to "inspire the desire to protect the planet".
It is run by a board of twenty-three members, comprising teachers, intellectuals, business leaders, former government officials and museum directors. NSW sponsors and funds research and scientific exploration. She has published official magazine, National Geographic , also publishes other magazines , in books , educational products, the maps and films , which are distributed in many languages and many countries. The National Geographic Society has created a foundation dedicated to education , which provides grants to educational organizations highlighting the teaching of geography . She has installed a free museum in its headquarters in Washington. It sponsors exhibitions, such as King Tut: the exhibition of objects from the tomb of a young pharaoh of Egypt , took place in several cities in the United States and finished his American tour at the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia.
History
The National Geographic Society began as a club of academics and wealthy entrepreneurs interested in travel . January 13, 1888 , thirty-three explorers and scientists are at the Cosmos Club (a private club located at the time in Lafayette Square in Washington ) to create "a society to increase and disseminate knowledge geography. After preparation of a charter, the National Geographic Society was officially created on January 27. Gardiner Greene Hubbard became its first president. His step-son, Alexander Graham Bell succeeded him after his death in 1897. In 1899 , the step-son of Alexander Graham Bell, Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, was appointed the first editor of the magazine full-time and the rest until 1954. The Grosvenor family members have been an important place in the Society.
Alexander Graham Bell and Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor have developed successfully, the notion of membership in the Society. They are also among the first to use the photograph in a magazine. The current Chairman of the Board of Directors of National Geographic is Gilbert Melville Grosvenor.
Publications
National Geographic
The magazine National Geographic is publishing an official of the National Geographic Society. Its first edition was published in October 1888 , nine months after the founding of the Society. The yellow cover is his trademark.
The magazine is a monthly and publishes a number cards each year. Occasionally, special issues are published on specific topics. The magazine contains articles about geography , the sciences , the history , the culture , events to news and photos from around the world. National Geographic is currently published in 33 foreign editions. The English edition affects approximately nine million readers per month. All other editions include forty million readers per month .
Other publications
In addition to its flagship magazine, National Geographic Society publishes five other newspapers in the United States :
- National Geographic Kids, for children : launched in 1975 as the it took its current name in 2001. The United States , approximately 1.5 million copies are sold monthly. It exists in eighteen other languages, which total over 500,000 copies. In 2007 , an edition in Arabic was launched in Egypt. Over 42,000 copies are distributed in Egyptian public schools, and 15,000 are sold. The latest editions are Albanian and Polish.
- National Geographic Little Kids: for children between three and six years.
- 'National Geographic Travelers': launched in 1984. Available in nine languages.
- National Geographic Adventure: launched in 1999.
- National Geographic Explorer Edition for Schools, launched in 2001 along with 2.5 million.
- National Geographic Green Guide: Launched in 2003 , it provides hints and tips for consumers who want to live more ecologically. It exists only edition electronic.

- Treasures of the Earth, the minerals and precious stones.
The National Geographic Society also runs a blog on the Internet, National Geographic News.
Other publications have disappeared:
- National Geographic School Bulletin, a magazine similar to but aimed at children of elementary schools , published weekly during the school year. It was edited from 1919 to 1975 before being replaced by National Geographic World.
- Between 1980 and 1990 , a journal of scientific research has been published, then deleted.
Television
The National Geographic Society owns a chain of television , National Geographic Channel. Special programs as well as several series are broadcast on American channels. Geographic series was broadcast from 1964 on CBS , then on ABC from 1973 , and finally on PBS since 1975. It involves many eminent scientists such as Louis Leakey , Jacques Cousteau , or Jane Goodall. Most specials have involved well-known actors as narrators, such as Richard Kiley and Martin Sheen. The generic special programs, composed by Elmer Bernstein , was adopted by the National Geographic Channel. The latter launched several sub-branches in the international market, as Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Adventure, Nat Geo Junior or Nat Geo Music.
National Geographic Films, which belongs to the National Geographic Society, produced a movie ( K-19: The Widowmaker ) based on the diary of a commander of a submarine Russian, with actor Harrison Ford. More recently she reshaped the movie French The Emperor's Journey to the American market, with the voice of Morgan Freeman. In 2007 , NSW has produced Arctic Tale, a documentary on the lives of two families of polar bears.

The NGS also sponsors the National Geographic Bee, an annual contest of geography for schoolchildren U.S.. More than four million students each year participate in the competition in their town, until the final, which meets in Washington, the winners of each U.S. state. An international team competition is held every two years. In 2009 , she was held in Mexico and brought together fifteen national teams. The Canadian won the contest, followed by the United States and by Poland.
The medal Hubbard
The Hubbard Medal is the highest honor awarded by the National Geographic Society for an exploration , a discovery or research. The medal bears the name of Gardiner Greene Hubbard, first president of the National Geographic Society. The Hubbard Medal has been awarded thirty-four times, the last posthumously to Matthew Henson , who accompanied Robert Peary in his exploration of the Arctic.
