/ / Identification

1-Nathanael was a disciple of Jesus who had been submitted by the apostle Philip , he appears only in the Gospel of John (John 1:43-51). It was to Cana in Galilee (Jn 21:2). As the name of Bartholomew followed that of Philip in the list of Twelve Apostles , Nathaniel he was treated. But no more Augustine of Hippo (Homily 7:17) that Epiphanius of Salamis not confounded. Indeed he wrote in his Panarion that Nathanael was the companion walking with Cleopas on the road the night of the Resurrection (Luke 24:18 Notice on the margins of the codex V of IX century). Yet Nathanael could be one of the Apostles, since returning to Jerusalem, the two companions found the Eleven assembled. He is the only disciple in John in which Jesus is praised: "Behold an Israelite indeed in whom there is no fraud." Israel was the name given by the angel to Jacob. Nathanael and to recognize Jesus as the Son of God and the king of Israel. Before all others, before Peter , and he confessed the Messiah Jesus. Jesus then spoke to him the dream that the patriarch had to Bethel , "And you see the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of man." The promise was renewed to Jacob Nathanael who became something of a new Jacob.

It should be with such authors as David Catchpole wonder if Nathaniel was not "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Summoned to the beginning of the Gospel, his statement before the wedding at Cana where he was born and it is therefore not impossible that he was the husband, for which Jesus turned water into wine. He reappears at the last meal , based on the breast of Jesus. It is then at the door of the house of the great priest at the foot of the cross and then running with Peter to the tomb. Finally he was again appointed and as Nathanael and as the beloved disciple in the last chapter, where he is jealous of Peter. Is Nathaniel was not a nickname behind which hid the fair Jacques , brother of the Lord. We know from Paul that he was married (1 Cor 9:5) and Luke that his wife was Mary (Luke 24: 10).
