Mutamid Abbasid Al

Abu al-Abbas Al-Mu `tamid bi-llah" Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Mutawakkil was born in 844. He becomes the fifteenth Caliph Abbasid of Baghdad in 870. It was the third son of Ja `far al-Mutawakkil to ascend the throne. He succeeded his cousin Al-Muhtadi. He died in October 892 ). He is the son of his brother Al-Muwaffak its successor under the name of Al-Mu `tadid.

Summary

Biography

On the death of Al-Muhtadi , courtiers out of its isolation Samarra the eldest son among survivors of Ja `far al-Mutawakkil. Musa bin Bogh who had been on the side of kharidjites , quickly returned to the court, becoming a faithful servant of al-Mu `tadid he was the protector of the caliph's son named as heir to the western part of the empire.

Al-Muwaffaq

During the revolt Zanj , Al-Mu `tamid enlisted the help of his brother Al-Muwaffaq ( 869 ) .. Relieved of his duties as governor of Madinah , Al-Muwaffaq took the reins of power. He kept until his death shortly before the Al-Mu `tamid itself.

The revolt of Zanj

Zanj the revolt began in 868 , Baghdad threatened. Al-Muwaffaq and his son al-Mu `tadid start a campaign to restore order in the empire. In 883 the revolt of Zanj, in southern Iraq , is over. Provincial control is strengthened.

The fight against Tulunids

The emir Tulunid Egypt Ahmad Ibn Tulun took advantage of the mobilization against Zanj and advances in Byzantine Anatolia to conquer Syria and part of northern Iraq under the pretext of defending the empire.


Ahmad Ibn Tulun saw an opportunity to increase its power in the expulsion of Al-Muwaffaq. He proposed to the Caliph to whom he remained only a shadow of power, his protection against his brother Al-Muwaffaq. The caliph would go to Egypt to seek safety under the protection of his faithful vassal. Ahmad ibn Tulun had reckoned without the vigilance of Al-Muwaffak. This learning of the conspiracy was to enter the Caliph Al-Mu `'tamid, and did take him chained to Samarra ( 882 ).

Al-Muwaffaq suffered increasingly from elephantiasis , his son al-Mu tadid has gradually taken over his duties from 889. Al-Muwaffaq died in June 891.

End of reign

Al-Mu `tamid does not include the power that had taken Al-Muwaffak and he was even forced to strip his son the title of presumptive successor to the award to Al-Mu tadid.

Al-Mu `tamid died in October 892 after a night of drinking that left him blind drunk.
