Mohel

The mohel (Hebrew , mohelim plural) is the function of one who performs the Brit Milah according to Jewish tradition, that is to say the circumcision ritual of a male child on the eighth day after birth.

Functions

In Judaism modern circumcision is performed by a mohel professional, dedicated and having a perfect knowledge of the proceedings and ritual.

Biblically, the commandment of circumcision is sent to the father of the child himself. However, the majority of Jewish fathers prefer to delegate the mohel.

It is customary for mohels to perform circumcision on their first own son if possible, under the direction of their "trainer".

Reform movements also train and accredit mohelim may even be doctors by profession.
