Mission Christianity

Mission literally means "sending" (from the Latin from the supine to "send").

Mission in the Christian response to the injunction of Christ in the Gospel of Matthew :

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. "(28:19-20)

Summary

History of Missions

This led to the historical movements of evangelization of peoples by some churches, which were each time an opportunity to rehabilitate the principles of the Christian faith in a particular culture. We can talk about five major periods of mission:

  1. The spread of Christianity in the fifth century to the fifteenth century.
  2. the Catholic missions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
  3. The Catholic missions from 1622 to the late eighteenth century or papal missions (1st part).
  4. Catholic missions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
  5. History of Protestant missions

In early Christianity, the term "mission" means the sending of the Son ( Jesus Christ ) from the Father ( God the Father ) and sending the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son. Ignatius Loyola was the first to use this term to describe an apostolic mandate in a particular territory. For a long time, "mission" therefore meant the expansion of the Christian religion to the founding of new churches. C'est seulement au vingtime sicle que la thologie a renouvel le lien avec la premire signification de "mission": l'envoi de l'glise dans le monde fut alors compris comme une prolongation de la missio Dei (Conseil international des missions Willingen , 1952). The missionary vocation of the Church derives not only imperative uttered by Jesus, but also the will of God be a God revealed and turned to the world. Since the Christian God is a missionary God, the Church as people of God must be a missionary. The activity of Jesus as described in the Gospels , was essentially missionary, it was understood as sent to preach, making present the kingdom of God and in turn sent the disciples. The interpretation of the mission from the missio Dei, which is now consensus among the Christian churches, allows a broad and comprehensive understanding of the mission is not limited to church planting. The task is rather the purpose and task of the whole Church, or as stated by D. Bosch (see bibliography): "Mission is' yes' to God for this world. The love of God and attention are directed towards this world and the mission is' participation in the existence of God in the world '(Schutz 1930:245).

An attitude of proselytism rather corresponds to a certain interpretation of a theological and spiritual category. Yet, all Christians of various denominations, who try to evangelize people of other religions or no religion are often accused of proselytizing hard, seeing mental manipulation. This has the essential effect of discrediting the religious movements "evangelists" such as Jehovah's Witnesses and Protestant evangelicals , while the intention is obviously to apply just the instructions Jesus recorded example in the Gospel of Matthew (24 : 14).

Many Christian organizations are appointing missionaries , sending them evangelize difficult territories where Christianity, the Gospel and the Bible are little known.
