mile Benveniste (pronunciation: Biographical Overview

Pupil of Antoine Meillet in the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes , then taught there from 1927 , and the College de France from 1937. He was taken prisoner in 1940 , but managed to escape and fled to Switzerland , where he remained until 1945.

From 1945 to 1959 , he was deputy secretary of the Linguistic Society of Paris , then he is the secretary 1959 to 1970. In 1960 , he was made a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-lettres and in 1965 became a member of the Accademia dei Lincei. In 1961 he founded, with Claude Levi-Strauss and Pierre Guru , The Man, French review of anthropology.

In 1969 , he suffered a stroke that left him aphasic. He died seven years later, in 1976 at the age of 74.
