The personal reign of Michael III begins after the murder, on his order, the November 20 855 , of Thoktistos.

Incapable of governing, Michael III leaves the government business to his uncle Bardas , which will prove very effective indeed: his reign, and under the influence of the Patriarch of Constantinople Photios , St. Cyril and St. Method start evangelizing Slavic peoples from 863 and in 864 the Tsar Bulgaria Boris I also converted to Christianity, Michael III military is facing a revolt of the Slavic peoples of the empire, crushed in 849 by General Thoktistos Vriennon , then the Russian expansion whose fleet was destroyed in 865 by a storm timely.

As for the Arab expansion in Asia Minor , it is contained by the great victory of another maternal uncle of the emperor, Petronas ( 863 ), and compensates for the defeat of the Byzantine army led by Michael III in person ( 860 ). For cons, the Crete is not included.

The new favorite of the emperor, Basil the Macedonian Emperor pushes to get rid of his uncle Bard 866. This crime sounded the end of the dynasty Amorian as Michael III did his favorite co-emperor.

Quickly tired of the behavior of Michael III, unable to control it, Basil had him assassinated on 23 September 867 Asylaion by his cousin and becomes sole emperor under the name of Basil I , thus ending the dynasty Amorian the benefit of the Macedonian dynasty.
