The Metropolitan Community Church (MCC ECM or in English ) is a fellowship of congregations Christian. She has 300 in 22 countries with over 43,000 members History

The movement has its origins in southern California in 1968

, decided to found a church for the gay community, and published an advertisement in the magazine The Advocate. On 6 October 1968 , he was joined by 12 people for the first liturgy of the movement. Since then, the church has consistently believed and moderator Troy Perry remained until 2005 . Today the church is present in over 20 countries, although the church is mainly located in the U.S. and Canada Theology and Sociology
The Eucharist

The theology of the ECM is based on the two major creeds of Christianity: creed of the apostles and the creed of Nicaea . Each church celebrates the Eucharist at least once a week and distributes communion to all. Communion may be directed by a priest or a layman . The ECM practice the autonomy of congregations under the doctrine and worship.

Advocacy

Troy Perry

One of the main points of the ECM has been an ongoing commitment to equal marriage rights without discrimination of sexual orientation. Reverend Troy Perry , a founder of the ECM had celebrated the first homosexual marriage in the United States in Huntington Park (California) in 1969. By 1970, he launched a lawsuit to obtain the right to gay marriage. The judicial result was a failure, but the social impact of his approach allowed the emergence of a debate that continues today. Each year more than 6,000 weddings are performed by the Metropolitan Community Churches worldwide.

Rev. Brent Hawkes and the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto have played a key role in the intellectual and political action that eventually led to the legalization of marriage for all persons regardless of their sexual orientation to Canada.

The most striking feature of the theology of the ECM is its perception of homosexuality and Christianity , combining faith and sexuality and to define a positive social and religious identity for people with gay, bi or trans-sexual.

The ECM affirms the department and place of each person within the Church. She also insists on equality and collegiality of decisions. Over the election of the Rev.. Nancy Wilson as moderator due to the ECM, one of the few municipalities where women have an important pastoral role.

Governance and administration

Direction

The ECM is governed by a council of elders and a board of directors. The board consisted of elders is a moderator , a vice-moderator and 7 deans. It deals with spirituality , development of propagation of the faith and Christian witness. Currently 7 of 9 deans are deans. The board has seven members, appointed by the council of elders. It is the legal representative of the Church. He takes care of business and financial practices. Both councils are assisted by a few permanent led by Rev. Dr. Cindi Love.
