Methodism
Methodism is a stream of evangelical Protestantism. 75 million people are members.
This church was founded in the eighteenth century by a preacher English , John Wesley. He left the United States to preach, but without the conviction of his own salvation. During the return trip, he shared the boat with missionaries Moravians , and was very impressed by their unwavering faith in spite of a storm.
This led him to a personal encounter with God , and his return to England he traveled the country on horseback, preaching the Gospel , gathering crowds in the open air, since the Anglican church saw a dim view of his activities. The name "Methodist" is that Wesley had a system or "method" of prayer and study for new converts and Christians grow in their faith.
In XXI century , the Methodist church continues a tradition of social force and insists on a personal moral restraint.
This church is present mainly in English speaking countries or in their former colonies. English and American churches are the most important, and they remain autonomous. Margaret Thatcher , George W. Bush , John Edwards , Hillary Rodham Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton are practicing Methodists.
In France , the movement is made early in the nineteenth century by century English preachers and pastors, particularly in the south of France, Vaunage , between Nimes and Montpellier by Charles Cook ; region which saw the end of previous century, the foundation of a movement Quaker to Congnies. Some groups of the Methodist Church have nevertheless joined in 1938 the Reformed Church of France.
The Methodist Church exists in France today under different names. The best known is that of UEEM, the Union of Evangelical Methodist Church of France. It is the result of a merger in 2005 between the Methodist Church of France and the Union of Methodist Churches. The UEEM is part of the world body United Methodist Church. This branch of Methodism, widespread in the United States, is the type Episcopalian, while the British Methodist Church is a Presbyterian church said.
