Matthew (Apostle)
Matthew, or Matthew or Levi-Matthew is one of the Twelve Apostles called by the Gospels. In the tradition of Christian , it is often symbolized by a man (often winged) because his gospel begins with the genealogy of Christ. Christians celebrate it on September 21 in West and November 16th in East. It is always celebrated in Lower Sambre (Prov. of Namur - Belgium) by accountants on the 4th Friday of September.

Born in Galilee , his name Levi, he was a publican (tax collector) to Capernaum , an employee at the toll of Herod. He followed Jesus. In the Gospel of Matthew: "Call of Matthew. As Jesus saw in passing, a man sitting at the customs office, his name was Matthew. He said: Follow me! And rising, he followed him. "Matthew 9.9. He became an apostle and wrote the first Gospel (source?). He preached to the Hebrews , wrote to them his Gospel in Aramaic , translated into Greek, and died a martyr in Ethiopia , at 61. His body was transferred to Salerno.
It is traditionally attributed to him what the first canonical Gospel , although the text does not state it. The exegesis of modern divided on this issue.
Attribute: the Gospel. As it appears as tax collector, apostle and evangelist Matthew is shown with gold weighing scales, the sword of martyrdom or the book of the Gospel, which ultimately is the most common attribute. Matthew is the patron saint of bankers, tax officials, French customs officers, accountants and carpenters (Trades of Namur).
According to Mark 2.14, he is the son of Alpheus. It is part of the 4 evangelists.

- Acts 1:13 When they arrived, they got into the room where they were staying, were Pierre Jean Jacques, Andre Philippe, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, Jacques, son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas, son of Jacques.

- Mark 2:14 By the way, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tolls. He said: Follow me. "Levi got up and followed him.
- Mark 2:15 As Jesus sat at meat in Levi's house, many publicans and sinners also began at table with him and his disciples as they were numerous, and they followed him.
- Luke 5:27 Then Jesus went out and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the tolls. He said: Follow me.
- Luke 5:28 And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.
- Luke 5:29 Levi made him a great feast in his house, many publicans and others were at table with them.
The Winged Man of St. Matthew
He is credited as the winged man symbol (sometimes wrongly called Angel) because his gospel begins with the genealogy of Jesus or, more precisely, that of Joseph , legal father of Jesus. Show: Tetramorph.

Pier Paolo Pasolini shot a black and white film of a great counting (as opposed to the King of kings Hollywood) called The Gospel According to St. Matthew. This film is also perfectly consistent with the original text.
