Malkiel Ashkenazi
The Hakham Malkiel Ashkenazi (? 1450) is a rabbi Sephardic known for his leadership of the Jewish community of Hebron in 1540, he revitalized. The Ottoman Empire gained control of the land of Israel in 1517 , the exiled Jews in Salonika (then Ottoman possession) were allowed to return legally in Palestine. Among these Jews, many were expelled from Spain in 1492.
The Hakham Malkiel Ashkenazi was responsible for the purchase of a courtyard with speakers in Hebron, where he established the Abraham Avinu synagogue , which became a center for the study of Kabbalah. Various buildings were built around the synagogue.
