Malines Conversations
Conversations Mechelen is the name that caught the story to describe the five meetings between various personalities Anglicans and Catholics , who are required to 1921 and 1925 to the Archbishopric of Mechelen initiated Charles Lindley Wood, Viscount Halifax and Lazarist Fernand Portal , under the direction of the primate of Belgium , the Cardinal Dsir Joseph Mercier.

A new process
These meetings are a first informal exchange and daring between Catholics and Anglicans with semi-tacit agreement of authorities on both sides, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Thomas Davidson and Pope Pius XI , at a time when the Catholic Church is yet obsessed by the fear of modernism .
The encyclical Mortalium animosity (1928) block shortly after the company Ecumenical Catholic side and wait Vatican II for an ecumenical dialogue can see daylight. Only in March 1966 that Pope Paul VI and Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey decided to resume a formal dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.
Nevertheless, some consider the Malines conversations are a crucial step in the history of modern ecumenism .
