Malindi, formerly French, is a city of Kenya inhabited by the Swahili from the fourteenth century. With only rival for Mombasa for dominance in this part of East Africa , Malindi has traditionally been a city port for foreign powers. In 1414 , the caliph of Malindi launches relations diplomatic with China during the voyages of the explorer Zheng He.
Passage to India
The explorer Portuguese Vasco da Gama met with authorities of Malindi in 1498 during his first exploratory trip to India. On this occasion, the browser has signed a trade and hired a guide for further travel in India.
In 1499 the Portuguese established a counter trade in Malindi which served as a stopover on the route to India. In 1520 , Portugal took possession of this city.
Portugal was already on the east coast of Africa, further south, the port cities of: Sofala , Mozambique and Kilwa.
