Lystra

Lystra Lystra or was in the ancient world , a city of Laconia. It was a colony of the Roman Empire established during the reign of Caesar Augustus in Anatolia , approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Iconium (now Konya ).

The situation of Lystra was unknown until 1885, when JRS Sterrett was discovered near the town of Hatunsaray, a Roman altar with the inscription "Lystra".

In the New Testament (Acts 16), Paul and Barnabas went to Lystra to proclaim the message of Jesus. The people of Lystra took Paul for Mercury and Barnabas for Zeus and tried to sacrifice for both. Timothy , Paul's companion, came from Lystra.
