Lod (in Hebrew : , in Arabic : - Greco-Latin is a city in the Middle District of Israel. This is one of the oldest cities in the country.

Bronze Age

The first written record of the city of Lod appears in the Bronze Age ( -2400 - -1400 ) in a list of cities Canaanite conquisent by Thutmose III at Karnak in the fifteenth century century Iron Age

Until the First Temple period, one finds no mention of the city of Lod. Archaeological remains of the Iron Age , however, show that the city was still inhabited. This fact also explains that the name of the town is preserved for a long period.

According to Jewish tradition, the city of Lod, was fortified since the days of Joshua son of Nun ( Babylonian Talmud , Megillah 4a ). The Chronicles attributes its foundation to the tribe of Benjamin :

The son of Elpaal were Ever Micheam and Chem. The latter was the founder of Ono and Lod, with its dependencies.

Period of the Second Temple

According to the book of Ezra (2:33), its inhabitants were deported to Babylon after the destruction of the Temple -586. In the Persian period, the city of Lod is attached to Samaria. Even after the conquest of the region by Alexander the Great in -333 , Lod remains Samaria.

During the revolt of the Maccabees revolt , which erupted nearby in the town of Modi'in , the city was recaptured from the Greeks by Jonathan. It was then attached to Judea. This annexation is then confirmed by the Seleucid kings Alexander I Balas and Demetrius II Nicator. Lod is mentioned in messages sent by Demetrius I. Soter Demetrius II and Jonathan. Hyrcanus II and Antipater failing to raise the sum required by Cassius, it enslaves the people of 4 cities of Judea, whose Lod . Under Herod , Lod remains an important center, and it seems there until the destruction of the Temple. Flavius Josephus describes it as

In the New Testament , Lydda is mentioned in connection with Peter, who healed a paralytic (Acts 9, 32-38).

According to a hadith , is at the gate of Lod on the return of Jesus that it will kill the Antichrist.

Roman-Byzantine Period

The Roman-Byzantine times, its name is Greek Diospolis.

The conquest by Israel

The town called Lydda before falling into the hands of Israeli forces during the operation Dani the summer of 1948 during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-1949. The capture of Lydda (and Ramla , fell at the same time) accompanied by one of the largest massacres of the war. Over 250 people are executed after the fighting . In addition, from July 14 , Israeli forces expelled many inhabitants of Lydda (Lod) and Ramla surrounding areas, and push them on the road to Ramallah. Such evictions around 50 000 to 60 000 inhabitants on 80 000 .

  • Arab: 24.3% (including 23.2% of Muslims, and Christians 1.1%).

Lod is the largest railway hub in the country and is located near the international airport David Ben Gurion in Tel Aviv , formerly known as Lod Airport.

The integration center of the Jewish Agency , the lead agency for the management of Jewish immigrants arriving in Israel, located in Lod.
