Chairman of the State of Israel is the head of state of Israel. It was essentially a ceremonial function. The current president is Shimon Peres.
Summary |
Election of President
A majority vote of an absolute (61 votes) of the Knesset directly appoints the new president. If no candidate comes out after the first three rounds of voting, a majority vote shall suffice.
He is elected for a term of seven years and can not be re-elected (before a recent reform, the presidential term was 5 years and could be renewed once). Any Israeli citizen who resides in Israel may be eligible.
The term of the presidential term can be caused by the resignation of the chairman or by a decision taken by three fourths of the members of the Knesset to impeach him for his conduct or inability to lead the office. There is no vice-president and as head of the state is the chairman of the Knesset in case of temporary incapacity of the president.
