List Of Books Of The Bible
Establishing a list of canonical books of the founders is always made by an authority. This applies both to the canon of the Septuagint , perhaps imitated an Alexandrian chronology , as the canon of the Hebrew Bible or to the canon of scriptures set to the Council of Trent.
Summary |
Catholics and Protestants have the same canon of books of the Old Testament. Catholics recognize the Deuterocanonical books , that is to say secondarily admitted into the canon (Greek deuteros second), that Protestants refer instead as apocryphal. Differences also exist between the Eastern churches.
Catholics recognize most of the books in the Septuagint which contained books written in Greek. From the Reformation , Luther , and, consequently, the Protestants have held that the books in the Tanakh , based on the principle given by Jerome , the translator of the Vulgate , the Hebraica veritas.
This difference in body of text founder takes to the publication in 1504 by Elias Levita, . This revision would have passed unnoticed if Eliahu had specified that only the consonantal text of the Tanakh is the writing of Ezra while the vocalization of the text is the work of Masoretes, completed around the sixth century.
Protestants became followers of the Hebrew version on behalf of its greater antiquity while Catholics deny this fact of the antiquity of the vowels later. They argued against the Protestants that the Septuagint was in use among the early Christians before finalization of the Hebrew canon and that the Bible can not be understood without the tradition established by the Magisterium in imitation of tradition Masoretes.
Studies on the canonization of the Old Testament
The case of vowels later launched the review of dogma Talmudic which postulated that the Pentateuch was written by Moses. This review was initiated by Gilbert Gnbrard ( in 1535 - 1 597 ) postulated that a canonization of the Hebrew Bible in 3 stages:
- after the writing of Ezra
- the high priest of Jerusalem had summoned the 72 translators of the Septuagint to send to Egypt canonize Tobit, Qohelet and other Ketoubim,
- Finally, a last synod, in Shammai and Hillel had canonized the books Maccabees.
The key issue at this time, trying to determine the progress of the Apocrypha until the Latin version of the canon, despite the opinion of Jerome to the Hebrew canon. John Cosin ( one thousand five hundred and ninety-five - one thousand six hundred seventy-two ) was to the Diaspora Jewish and had itself introduced initially in the Greek version of Theodotion , and that they had passed away in the Latin version. The Greek factor was stressed by John Ernest Grabe ( 1 666 - 1 711 ) which, assuming Gnbrard a Sanhedrin of Jerusalem to instruct the Seventies, substituted that of a Sanhedrin of Alexandria, after observing that most of the Apocrypha were Alexandria. The English translator of the Letter of Aristeas, Thomas Lewis , said that many writings of the Old Testament were in use at the Jewish Temple Leontopolis and, through them, found their way to Palestine.
