Biblical passages
St. Elizabeth is mentioned in the Bible in the Gospel according to Luke chapter 1: she is a woman, a cousin of Mary, wife of the priest Zechariah and without children (which is a shame at the time). The archangel Gabriel announced to her husband, the birth of a son, the future prophet John the Baptist. Elizabeth is also in the episode called the Visitation which was proclaimed the Magnificat and part of the Ave Maria , which the prayers Catholicism attaches great importance.
The Gospel is careful to clarify that not only Zechariah is a priest, but Elizabeth is also a descendant of Aaron (Luke 1, 5). Now she is the cousin of the Virgin Mary. Such accuracy might suggest (without providing any certainty) that Mary, as the traditions relating descendant of King David (which is not surprising, since the Gospel says that her husband Joseph was the House of David: Luke 1 , 27, cf. v. 32 about Jesus, "the throne of David his father"), also descended from the high priest Aaron.
Note also that Zechariah is struck dumb since the announcement by the Angel is Elizabeth who took the floor to say: "No, he called John", which was confirmed in writing by her husband dumb covering the floor soon. ((Luke 1, 60-64)
