Later Emperors
Latest emperors called disorderly succession of emperors in the western part of the Roman Empire in 455 (year of death of the last Theodosius , Valentinian III ) at 476 , the date of the deposition of Romulus Augustus by Odoacer. Some were proclaimed by the local troops present in Italy, others ( Majorian , Anthemius , Julius Nepos ) came to power with the support of Empeur East.
The last ten emperors
The list reveals the instability of the imperial power from 455 because in the course of 20 years, 9 emperors ascended the throne. During the period instabilite of power, a man Ricimer pulled the strings of power from 455 until his death in 472 :
- Valentinian III was murdered in 455; end of the Theodosian dynasty in the West;
- Petronius Maximus , killed by a mob in 455 during flight;
- Eparchus Avitus , in exile after his defeat at Piacenza in 456;
- Majorian executed by Ricimer in 461;
- Libius Severus , who died a natural death in 465, a puppet under the command of Ricimer;
- interregne from 465 to 467;
- Anthemius , executed in 472 by Ricimer ;
- Olybrius , died a natural death in 473;
- Glycerius , introduced in 474;
- Julius Nepos , introduced in 475 and murdered in 480;
- Romulus Augustus , introduced in 476;
- In the fall of Romulus Augustus, the Heruli , barbaric people represented by their leader Odoacer dominate what remains of the Empire in his Italian side. The Gallo-Roman fall 10 years later face the Franks.
