The river Krishna or Kistna is one of the longest of India with over 1290 kilometers.
Geography
It rises to Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra and joins the sea in the Bay of Bengal to Hamasaladeevi in the Andhra Pradesh after crossing the Karnataka.
The traditional source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Mahabaleshwar. Its most important tributary is the Tungabhadra , itself formed by the meeting of rivers Tunga and Bhadra from Ghats Western. Among its other tributaries include the Koyna , the Bhima , the Mallaprabha the Ghataprabha , the Yerli , the Warna , the Dindi , the Musi and Dudhganga.
Two major dams were constructed on the river, one at Srisailam and the other at Nagarjuna Hill. The latter, called Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir generates a considered one of the largest built by humans.
