Klaus Synagogue is a synagogue Baroque in Prague , dating from 1694 and revised in 1884. Located in the former ghetto 's Jewish Town, Josefov , it houses an exhibition on Jewish customs and traditions.

Klaus Synagogue is located at the entrance to the old Jewish cemetery. Its name comes from the German word meaning little klaus building, which is derived from Latin claustrum.

Klausen (plural klaus) was the name of the three smaller original buildings that Moredehai Maisel , head of the Jewish community of Prague, was erected in honor of the visit of Emperor Maximilian II in the ghetto of Prague in 1573.

After the destruction of the original Klausen fire in 1689, work on the current synagogue Klaus was undertaken and was completed in 1604. Another reconstruction of the synagogue took place in the 1880s.

Klaus Synagogue occupies an important place in the history of the Jewish quarter of Prague. It was the largest synagogue in the ghetto and the seat of the funeral of Prague.

Exhibition

The permanent exhibition on Jewish customs and traditions, held in the main aisle of the synagogue, highlights the importance of the synagogue and Jewish holidays traditional. The gallery houses the synagogue Klaus parts related to the daily life of Jewish families and the traditions related to birth, circumcision , the bar mitzvah (that is to say the Jewish communion), marriage, Divorce and the Jewish family.
