Summary

/ / Barsabbas and Jude

The King James Version considers Barsabbas and Jude are the same two people. This is not the case of RSV (Bible of French Protestants), who distinguished names, as in Greek.

For information here is the passage in Greek (...) Acts 15.22:

, , ,

In The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, evoking the possibility that it was two brothers.

Barnabas

There is also this mention in Acts 4.36:

Joseph, surnamed by the apostles Barnabas, which means son of exhortation, a Levite from Cyprus

This is the name used in the letter sent to Antioch (see below).

Western codex or codices Bezae Barnabas uses the term in Act 1.22.

The name Barnabas is used much more (32 times) in the Proceedings. This is St. Barnabas.

  • 3:23 p.m. They charged them a letter: The apostles, elders, and brothers, brothers of the Gentiles, who are in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia, hello!
  • 3:24 p.m. Having learned that some men went out from us, and that we had given no orders have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls,
  • 3:25 p.m. we thought about, after we all together, to choose delegates and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
  • 3:26 p.m. these men who risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 3:27 p.m. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will announce their mouth the same things.
  • 3:28 p.m. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and we do require you to load other than what is necessary,
  • 3:29 p.m. know, that you abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, strangled, and fornication, things against which you will find much to keep you alert. Goodbye.
  • 3:30 p.m. So they, having taken leave of the church, went to Antioch, where they delivered the letter to the assembled multitude.
  • 3:31 p.m. After reading, the brothers were delighted by the encouragement she brought them.
  • 3:32 p.m. Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, exhorted and fortified by several speeches.
  • 3:33 p.m. After some time, let the brothers return in peace to those who sent them.
  • 3:34 p.m. However Silas thought good to stay.
  • 3:35 p.m. Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching, with many others, the good news of the Lord's word.

  • 3:37 p.m. Barnabas wanted to take also John, surnamed Mark;
  • 3:38 p.m. but Paul thought it more appropriate not to take with them one who had since left the Pamphylia, and who had assisted in their development work.

  • 3:41 p.m. He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
