John Viii Palaeologus
John VIII Palaeologus, born 16 December 1392 in Constantinople , died on 31 October 1448 , Emperor Byzantine from 1425 to 1448 , the son of Manuel II Palaeologus , Byzantine Emperor, and Helena Dragas.
When John VIII ascended the throne, the Byzantine Empire was reduced to the city of Constantinople and the Morea. March 26, 1430, the Turks seized in Thessaloniki, who was then the second city of the Empire.
John VIII then seeks help from Westerners and Pope Eugene IV, who sent him a messenger in the person of Nicolas of Cusa. In concluding the union of Churches ( Council of Florence in 1439 ), it facilitates the adoption of a common interpretation of the Latin Filioque, but John VIII can not impose on his people: Most of the dignitaries of the Orthodox Church condemned, indeed, the results of the council and undermine the position of the Emperor.
The disaster of Varna , 10 December 1444 , delivers the Byzantine Empire to the Turks in 1446 , which impose their tutelage.
