John Scheid

John Scheid, born in 1946 in Luxembourg ( Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ), is a historian French (naturalized in 1973 ), specialist in ancient , professor at College de France.

Biography

Scheid studied history and classics at the University of Strasbourg II , where he argued in 1971 Third cycle thesis on The Brothers Arval: recruitment and social origin under the Julio-Claudian. In 1987il has supported in the same university a doctorate of State, entitled Romulus and his brothers. The cult of the Arval brothers, model of public worship in the Roman emperors. Specialist Roman civilization , he wrote, The Brothers Arval: recruitment and social origin under the Julio-Claudian, Religion and Piety in Rome, Roman Religion and When to do is believe, the sacrificial rites of the Romans. He was director of studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes , Section of Religious Studies (Religions of Rome ") from 1983 to 2001. He is also co-director of the Journal of the History of Religions. Member of the editorial board of the Archives of Social Sciences of Religion, the Archiv fr Religionsgeschichte (Teubner, Stuttgart-Leipzig), the Potsdamer Beitrge Althistorische, magazine Historia , of Millennium and Mythos.

He has headed since 1974 the excavations of the Magliana (Rome). He is also co-director of excavations at Jebel Oust in Tunisia , coordinator of the excavation of a necropolis in Experimental Class in Italy and project coordinator Fana Templa Delubra. Corpus places of worship in ancient Italy.

Since 2001 he is professor at the College de France, where he heads the Religion courses, institutions and society of ancient Rome.
